Legislative elections: Deadline to submit candidacy files extended because of large number

ALGIERS- The deadline for the submission of the candidacy files for the legislative elections of 12 June 2021 has been extended until 27 April at midnight, because of the large number of the submitted files.
This extension has been made by virtue of an order, signed by President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune, modifying and completing the organic law on the electoral system.
The deadline for the submission of the candidacy files has been extended at the request of the National Independent Authority of Elections (ANIE) and after consulting the State Council and the Constitutional Council as well as the opinion of the Council of ministers.
The last deadline for the submission of the candidacy files was set first on Thursday 23 April 2021 at midnight, after having started on 11 March 2021.
The Constitutional Council affirmed “the constitutionality” of the provisions of the presidential order on the extension of the deadline of the candidacy submission for the legislative elections of 12 June, considering that they “do not undermine the constitutional guarantees of exercising by the citizens of their right to be candidates,” according to the Official Journal.
The decision on the control of the constitutionality of the order modifying and completing the edict on the organic law relating to the electoral system, concerning the extension by five days of the candidacy submission deadline for the legislative of 12 June, was published in the last edition of the Official Journal.
ANIE’s head Mohamed Charfi said that his body has made a request to the President of the Republic for the extension of the deadline of the submission of files, who responded to this request, in tune with the objective of these elections consisting in the renewal of the political climate and class and the building of institutions on the people’s free choice.
He recently reported 1,755 lists of authorized political parties and 2,898 lists of independents wishing to become candidates in the legislative elections of 12 June 2021, i.e. a total of 4,653 lists.
President Tebboune signed on 11 March 2021 the presidential decree to convene the electoral body for the legislative elections of 12 June 2021.
The President of the Republic also signed, on 10 March 2021, the edict 01/21 on the organic law relating to the electoral system.
