Algeria to launch tender for 1GW of renewable energy between June and July

Algeria intends to use its abundant solar energy resource to position itself in the regional energy market. With this in mind, the country will launch a tender for the construction of 10 power plants within a few weeks.

Algeria announced the launch, between June and July, of a tender for the deployment of a renewable energy capacity of 1 GW. The Algerian government issued a decree on 29 April entrusting the management and supervision of the tender to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energy.

The tender “will be divided into ten lots of 100 MW each and will allow the realization of projects that will be planned with foreign financing,”said Mouloud Bakli, president of the Algerian think tank Club Energia. According to the latter, the government is working on an agreement to purchase bankable electricity for selected projects. Certain national content requirements for cables, modules and assembly structures should be included in the tender.

The country plans to launch three more similar tenders each year between 2022 and 2024. In 2019, the Algerian government launched calls for off-grid hybrid projects (solar-diesel and photovoltaic). They were part of the plan to deploy 22 GW of clean energy capacity by 2030, including 13.6 GW of solar. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, Algeria had a solar production capacity of about 423 MW by the end of 2020.
